About Me

My name is Jane Lee and I'm currently a sophomore at Lynbrook High School. I'm from Hong Kong. Just thought I had to say that, because I'm PROUD OF IT. :) And Lee is also a common Taiwanese or Korean last name, so I just wanted to clear things up a bit (not that I'm racist or anything!).

I seem to have quite a few extra-curricular interests...they often come and go, but here are the ones that stuck. By the way, I'm warning you -- there's a lot to read here (and I already cut out a lot of what I originally wanted to say).

1) Music. I've always grown up with classical music, and still live in a house full of it today! My eldest brother watches videos of all kind of classical music all the time, whistles it practically 24/7, and even conducts to an imaginary orchestra while doing so. I know it sounds crazy...but it's true. The only music CD we've ever had in the car was of Beethoven's nine symphonies and five piano concertos, so my whole family has known those pieces by heart ever since I was 5 or 6 years old. I've been playing the piano for about six years now (I don't remember the exact time I started) and the french horn for four years. I take private lessons for both instruments, but also play french horn in my school band and an outside-of-school orchestra. I'm actually starting to recognize several pop songs though, since that's the only music that's played in modern/contemporary dance classes. Ballet doesn't count.

2) Gymnastics. I started gymnastics when I was six years old, and even though I quit right at the beginning of 7th grade, it will always remain as one of my interests. Lots of people seemed to be into Olympic gymnastics this year, but really, I'm the one who appreciates it the most...I'm kidding! I'm sure everyone who watches it will fall in love. I do enjoy watching gymnastics a lot (I definitely can't do anything anymore) and am looking forward to hopefully see my old gym friends on TV one day!

3) Kung fu. Shortly before I quit gymnastics, my mom enrolled me in kung fu classes after hearing about it from another "gymnastics mom." The type of kung fu is not what people would normally imagine though; it can't be used for fighting, and is almost like dance except with kung fu moves. We have choreographed forms that involve cool jumps and flips, and competitions are based on how well you execute the moves, not who wins in a fight. Anyway, this type of kung fu was good for me since I already had my flexibility and strength from my gymnastics background.

4) Dance. I only started dancing last year, so I'm pretty much considered an amateur. It all started when my mom wanted me to try out for the dance team just for the fun of it (no idea why actually). Having no dance experience at all, I walked in to tryouts and relied on my flexibility from gymnastics and kung fu to show them what I had to offer (which was almost nothing). Some people say gymnastics is similar to dance with the turns and jumps, but it's pretty much only the split leaps that are similar. Nevertheless, I made the team somehow...and the first few months were pretty hard. I was totally new to dance so learning choreography for school rallies and shows required a lot of concentration and brain power. Everything wasn't difficult; it was just new. Well now it's almost a new year and I've learned so much about dance all throughout freshmen year. Even though I'm probably not good enough to pursue it seriously and competitively given that I started so late, dance has still become one of my new favorite hobbies.

5) Baking. I always have sleepovers with one of my best friends that I met in gymnastics, and the one thing we do every time we hang out is bake. Literally. And I think that's how I developed my interest in the area! There was a time not long ago when I was actually considering going into culinary school and opening a bakery, but I soon realized that it's not the way I want to go. Now, baking is not such a serious passion, but is definitely something I like to do in my pastime.

6) Arts and Crafts. This is another one of my hobbies that I probably developed through countless sleepovers with that same friend. I like to make friendship bracelets, cards, and...that's actually it. So not really arts and crafts, just friendship bracelets and cards. :)

7) Hair Braiding. This is my most "recently-acquired" interest. For this, I have no idea how I got into it. I just did. But now that I cut my hair, I can't really do much to it until it grows out again! Another thing about me: my hair grows VERY slowly...so it's probably going to take me one or two years to grow my hair out to a normal length again. :(

Sorry for making this so long... If you read the entire thing, thank you! I appreciate your interest in my life (not that I want stalkers or anything...).
